Justice Nihal Jayasinghe complete term as Sri Lanka ’s High Commissioner in the UK and moves to Cambodian war crimes tribuna

A reception was held at the Sri Lanka High Commission to bid farewell to the outgoing High Commissioner, Justice Nihal Jayasinghe.  Picture shows a section of his staff posing for a photograph.

Justice Nihal Jayasinghe, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the UK completed his tour of duty on 31 December 2010.

 

A farewell reception was held in the High Commission for a limited number of invitees in addition to private events organised by various organisations, Sri Lankan expatriates in London as well as well wishers.

 

Justice Jayasinghe has been an expert in criminal justice for the most of his extensive legal career which spans over 35 years, including 22 years in the Attorney General’s Department in Sri Lanka where he began as a State Counsel and rose to the level of a Deputy Solicitor General.  He was appointed Judge of the Court of Appeal in Sri Lanka in 1994 and was made the President of the Court of Appeals in 2002. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2002.  One of the senior – most Judges in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, Justice Jayasinghe had served as the Acting Chief Justice on a number of occasions by the time he was picked as Sri Lanka’s envoy to the Court of St. James’s in 2008.

 

In his new assignment, Justice Jayasinghe will be attached full time to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) commonly known as Cambodian war tribunals, which is a special Court created by the United Nations for the prosecution of crimes committed during the Khmer Rouge controlled Democratic Kampuchea.  Justice Jayasinghe will assume as a Judge in the Supreme Court Chamber of the ECCC, which consists of a number of International Judges.

 

An old boy of St. Joseph ’s College, Colombo , Justice Nihal Jayasinghe holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Colombo .  A visiting Scholar at University of Illinois , Chicago , he was awarded a Diploma in Human Rights by the University of Lund, Sweden
